BEDROOM & BATHROOM MONTH: Sourcing eco-friendly equipment and energy-efficient solutions for resident rooms

As the sector increasingly embraces sustainability, care home managers across the are re-evaluating how resident bedrooms and bathrooms are equipped to balance comfort with environmental responsibility. With the NHS’s Net Zero targets influencing policy and procurement across the wider healthcare ecosystem, care homes attending the Care Forum are aligning their operations to reduce emissions and demonstrate responsible resource use. A growing area of focus is sustainable room fit-outs…

From energy-efficient lighting to low-flow bathroom fittings, there is now a wealth of environmentally conscious solutions available for care environments. LED lighting, for instance, not only reduces electricity use by up to 80% compared to traditional bulbs but also provides soft, flicker-free illumination suitable for residents with visual or cognitive sensitivities. Smart lighting systems can adjust brightness based on time of day or occupancy, further reducing unnecessary usage.

Bathroom design is also undergoing a green transformation. Thermostatic mixer taps and sensor-activated fittings help to conserve water while improving infection control. Low-flow toilets and aerated showerheads can significantly reduce water consumption without compromising on performance. Many care homes are also choosing durable, recyclable materials like bamboo or sustainably sourced wood for furniture and accessories, favouring modular designs that simplify repairs and extend product lifecycles.

Mattress and bedding choices are another area where sustainability meets resident comfort. A new generation of mattresses made from recycled materials or sustainably harvested latex are now available, designed with pressure relief and moisture-wicking properties essential for elderly residents. Some providers offer take-back schemes or closed-loop recycling, helping homes reduce landfill waste at the end of a product’s life.

Beyond the products themselves, procurement strategies are also evolving. More care home groups are incorporating sustainability criteria into their supplier selection, prioritising manufacturers that can demonstrate carbon offsetting, ethical sourcing, and transparent environmental practices. Long-term partnerships with eco-conscious suppliers are becoming a competitive advantage, offering access to innovations that support both ESG goals and care outcomes.

Crucially, sustainable upgrades do not have to come at the expense of aesthetics or comfort. Many modern solutions combine sleek, domestic-style design with clinical-grade performance, helping to create warm, homely spaces that support resident dignity and wellbeing.

As environmental expectations rise across public and private care providers, investing in sustainable bedroom and bathroom equipment is a key step toward futureproofing care homes for regulatory compliance, resident satisfaction, and long-term cost savings.
